Time to Stock Up On Blueberries
We’re still in the midst of blueberry season here, and now is the time to stock up, whether you’re picking your own or buying at the farmers market. Blueberries are among the easiest of foods to freeze, and make a great frozen treat for hot kids, are wonderful additions to smoothies, and are perfect for [...]
Dewberries: Coming Soon to a Field Near You
Dewberries, an early-ripening trailing variety of blackberry, are just beginning to ripen. I picked the first ripe one from the patch in our yard today. Wonder where you can find some? Think back a month or so and remember if you noticed any weedy fields filled with small white flowers on prickly canes (that look [...]
In Our Kitchen
When we picked up our CSA share yesterday I also got some strawberries from a roadside stand (Nolte Farm south of Fairhope on 98). It’s a little place, adjacent to the strawberry field where workers bent among the rows, picking more fruit to refill the emptying tables. Just ahead of me, an older couple had [...]
In My Kitchen Garden: Blackberries – Make That Dewberries
See the comments for an explanation of the title. Today we harvested close to a pint of blackberries from the volunteer canes growing in our yard. As a friend recently commented in regards to her own yard, at least there’s an upside to not being vigilant about the weeds. These came from a patch that [...]
In My Kitchen Garden: Blueberries
The latest additions to our kitchen garden, after visiting the plant sale, are a half dozen blueberry bushes which we’ve planted along our front walk. They’re flowering right now and I love watching the bumblebees visiting the flowers. I was thinking that despite my plans to scale back, we still have a lot going on [...]
How NOT to Go Blueberry Picking
Don’t forget to get cash. Don’t forget to stop at the bank once you’ve forgotten to get cash. Don’t forget your check book if you’re going to forget the cash. Don’t take a three year-old. If you do take aforementioned three year-old, don’t mention that the place you’re going after picking berries is the beach. [...]
Blueberry Season Is Around the Corner
I’ve received an inquiry about blueberries, and can confirm that both “Betty’s Berry Farm”:http://bettysberryfarm.com/ and Bee Natural Farm will be open for u-pick this year, beginning around June 1 (possibly by the end of May so check with them directly if you just can’t wait to go). You can find other u-pick locations (as well [...]
In My Kitchen Garden: Blackberries
We’ve got blackberry canes growing wild along one side of our fence, mingled with a heavy, fragrant honeysuckle vine. No work is required on our part, and they produce a few handfuls of berries each spring. It’s never enough to cook with, but they make a nice, tart treat sprinkled on morning cereal. Occasionally I [...]
Strawberry Season
I had my first local strawberries (from Baldwin County) on March 1. I called B.J. Farms today and they said their u-pick would be open the first week in April. You can buy harvested berries there now.
