Of Interest: USDA Releases New Zone Map

New USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

NPR’s The Salt notes that the USDA has released an updated Plant Hardiness Zone Map, the first revision since 1990. The new zones have shifted northward, reflecting increased average temperatures, and the Mobile area is solidly in 8b (adjacent to 9a). Of course, your microclimate may vary and gardeners can use season extenders and other tricks to grow plants that are technically out of their zone; the map is just a starting point.
