In My Kitchen Garden: Tomatoes

Two small newly-picked vine-ripe tomatoes.
I might have let them ripen a touch longer, but who wouldn’t be eager to harvest the first two tomatoes of the season? The thing you can’t tell, because there’s nothing in the photo for scale, is how small they are…the larger one is about 2.5″ in diameter.

When does the tomato season begin in earnest?

Admittedly I’m no expert, but if we’ve got tomatoes ripening in our garden you can bet there’s plenty of farmers who got their plants in the ground earlier than we did. We should be hitting the height of tomato season now and through June; the intense heat of our summer months causes production to fall off in July and August. That’s one reason why the markets close down then.
